Virtual Cluster Interconnect

Gridlock optionally combines several commodity packet switched networks into a single "trunked" network, achieving performance and reliability previously exclusive to the likes of FibreChannel, InfiniBand and Myrinet, at a fraction of the cost. The patent pending Virtual Cluster Interconnect (VCI) technology works by "stacking" commodity Gigabit Ethernet switches and network cards, forming parallel redundant network paths that double or triple the throughput. This allows VCI to reach multi-Gigabit capacities, while eliminating single points of failure.

Distributed Service Manager

Gridlock is a fully-fledged Distributed Service Manager (DSM), orchestrating the allocation of services among computers in a grid or cluster. Based on customisable policies, Gridlock will assign services to available machines and re-assign those services in the event of a failure.

Cross-platform

Gridlock is written in pure Java and is cross-platform, running on any architecture that supports Java - and there are over 30 platforms that do. That said, applications utilising Gridlock do not have to be Java-enabled, with the aid of platform-specific adapters that "plug" into Gridlock.

Application support

Gridlock has out-of-the-box support for many database systems, such as those used for e-commerce and online transaction processing, as well as web servers, application servers, file servers and collaboration systems such as software revision control and issue tracking applications.

Distributed Job Manager

Gridlock is a fully-featured Distributed Job Manager (DJM), facilitating the scheduling, parallelising and distribution of resource-intensive jobs among the nodes in a grid or cluster. Gridlock employs its proprietary and unencumbered SplitFold algorithm for assigning jobs to computing resources with optional redundancy, whereby the same job fragment can be allocated to more than one resource, guaranteeing job completion in the event of a failure. And unlike similar products, there is no single scheduler, such that the failure of one scheduler does not incapacitate the grid.

Live configuration

Gone are the days of rolling upgrades, when you had to stop individual computers in the middle of the night to alleviate the effect on the user. Gridlock enables an administrator to reconfigure a cluster while it's in operation, without bringing down any nodes, stopping any services, or affecting the end-user in any way.

Secure remote monitoring and control

All communications between the Gridlock cluster nodes and remote management applications are encrypted using the widely adopted and scrutinised Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), using 256-bit keys and X.509 Digital Certificates for mutual authentication. Because the Gridlock security architecture is built on top of the industry-standard Public Key Infrastructure, it gives the administrator the utmost flexibility in how encryption keys and certificates are generated and distributed among the cluster nodes and remote monitoring applications. The key distribution schemes vary from as simple as a shared keys scheme, to more elaborate schemes employing certificate authorities, such as VeriSign.

SimGrid

The newest addition to our middleware suite, SimGrid is a discrete event simulator that models and profiles the dynamic behaviour of clustered topologies without employing any physical resources. SimGrid is a complete simulation encompassing the Gridlock nodes, the switchgear, cabling and power supplies. SimGrid performs both manual and automated component failure simulations, all the way from application failures right down to the network and power level, providing an accurate evaluation of a hypothetical grid or cluster deployment before any funds are invested in the "metal". By running a comprehensive discrete event simulation in pure software, SimGrid brings cost effectiveness to a whole new level.
